ALBUM REVIEW: SROS Lords - 'For Gas and Vinyl' - EP

SROS Lords is a three piece punk band hailing from Detroit, Michigan.
The band consists of Morgan on Guitars & Vocals, Jamie on Drums, and Cait on Synth.

This Urinal Cake Records' artist released their new EP ‘For Gas and Vinyl' this past October.  The EP showcases a synthesizer sound fused with punk.  Now I don’t usually listen to this style rock music, but thanks to the synthesizers and hints of alternative rock I was able to find the music very enjoyable.

Morgan's guitar & vocals compliment Cait's synth parts very nicely.  Jamie's drums provide a nice groove.  SROS Lords definitely show that they have developed a tight sound after starting in 2010.

Overall I found this to be a solid EP.  One of my favorite tracks was "Jesse's Girl" and no it isn't a cover of the 1981 hit by Rick Springfield.  "The End" is another track I favored off this EP.  It is actually my favorite song of 'For Gas and Vinyl’.  The theme of lyrics in this song are very apocalyptical.  This song goes well with the science fiction like sound the band has created.  The overall sound on the EP reminds me of early Blink-182 fused with the Tom DeLonge's Angel & Airwaves.

If you like rock music, SROS Lords has definitely created an EP that is worth checking out.  I hope they will continue to create music.

Stone Sour at Hurricane Harry's with Papa Roach

So on February 5th, I went to College Station home of the Aggies to see Stone Sour for the first time. I also had a VIP pass to meet the band. For those of you who don't know Corey Taylor has been very influential these past few years. Pretty much my favorite vocalist and lyric writer.

Now a days getting into a venue is extremely difficult and a lot waiting. The ticket lines were ridiculously. I'm glad I got out of car and waited at Hurricane Harry's when I did. Thank GOD for the iPOD. I plugged in and listened to Chris Hardwick and The Nerdiest Podcast. Now I mention this because it will relate to one of the songs played by Stone Sour.

So like I said waiting. After you get into venue. One must wait and find a place to stand. Now since I was on the VIP list I had to get the pass before the show was over, according the lady at the merch table. So I got my pass after Papa Roach's Set. This concert I stood in many different areas.

For the opening act Otherwise, I stood on the right side of the stage. Overall I enjoyed Otherwise. They were entertaining. Though I've heard many bands like them. I mean I never heard of them and I was able to guess the next drum fill during one of their original songs. They are stationed out of Las Vegas but have family ties to Texas. The most entertaining part of Otherwise's performance was the bass player who was hooked up with a wireless input. So he came out and stood on these railings made to set your beverages on. It was pretty cool to see him do that. I also enjoyed their cover of Rage Against the Machines' Killing In The Name!

So after Otherwise, Papa Roach came on. The songs from the newer albums were good. I haven't listened to them because I'm selective on what I purchase. When I was watching Papa Roach, I thought I was back in Hattiesburg for a moment. They were the last national rock band that I know of that came to Hattiesburg. The last national act at The Bottling Company.

For Papa Roach, I was on the left side of the stage. I'm glad I was because Jacoby walked around the whole venue during the song Lifeline. He then did the a dive into the crowd to crowd surf back to the stage for the last two songs. By the way there was a lot of crowd surfing going on.

After I got my VIP pass, I got back into the crowd to find a place to watch Stone Sour. I got a little closer on the left side of stage. Now this show was awesome and entertaining Josh Rand's guitar skills were phenomenal. James "Jim" Root played just as phenomenal. Roy Mayorga was superb on the drums. Then Johnny Chow added a very warm sounding bass that completed the the overall music sound of Stone Sour. Then there was Corey Taylor. He gets better every time. His wife Stephanie would hand him bottles of water that he would keep pouring on us. One of them actually actually hit the light and bounced back and hit someone. Corey made sure he didn't hurt the person. He made sure everyone was having a good time. Now he wasn't sure how the venue was going to fit everyone, but after seeing everyone squeezed in there was no doubt.

Now thanks to the place crowded it was hot and sweated which Corey mentioned after took of his shirt. Later Roy did the same. And they gave each other a fist bump.

Okay so the Set List for Stone Sour:
Gone Sovereign
Absolute Zero
Mission Statement
Hell & Consequences
Digital (Did You Tell) - Before this song was played Corey mentioned how society doesn't unplug and how we have our faces in front of screens. I believe he is right. Though most of the things I do take place at computer. Editing photos, doing layouts, editing video, and even recording music can take place in front of a digital screen. Though it is not to have the device for certain things like looking up facts or listening to a Podcast. I could say more but this isn't the right place. So onward...

Made of Scars
A Rumor Of Skin
Reborn
Ru486
Say You'll Haunt Me
Nutshell (Alice In Chains)
Bother
Superstitious (Stevie Wonder)
Through Glass
The Travelers, Part 2
Last Of The Real
30/30-150

Then as the band bowed a recording of They're Coming to Take Me Away (Napoleon XIV)

There was no real encore so afterwards, I waited to meet the band. The VIP thing that was fulfilled was a picture with the band. I got a picture with individual members. It was hard to get a photo with all of them. Though I was happy about the ones I got. I talked to all of them.

Josh Rand talked about House of Gold & Bones, Part 2. He mentioned that it would be like a movie soundtrack and very experiential. He said James and him used very heavy gauge strings almost bass like.

James Root was very nice to meet. I told him I was following him on Instagram. He was very humorous.

Johnny Chow is funny. I talked to him about the bass. And he said thank you for laughing at his jokes.

Roy talked about Drums. Imagine that. He mentioned something about it being a long day. I said it was.

That's when they were wrapping things up so I had to hurry and get my last signature from Corey. I talked to Corey for a second but I'm glad I got to meet him and get a photo with him. Part of my bucket list is crossed off. His wife made sure I was able to well lit photo which reminded me of Dave and I at a Third Eye Blind. I think if that band tours again near Dave, I'll make sure he gets a better lit photo.

I think it was good I didn't ask Corey a lot. My only question can wait until latter because most of my questions have been answered online through interviews (written, audio, or video) and in his book. I didn't really know anything about the other guys. So it was nice to get to know the other guys.

Overall awesome night right. Plus I told someone I would have extra fun for them. I'm glad I made the decision to do the meet and greet. Best Birthday present to myself yet. Also I would like to thank my parents again for purchasing my ticket as part of my birthday present.

The event that followed was not so fun. I get back to my car. Ready to leave, but to be stopped by a police officer. I was confused at first. Anyway my passenger side view mirror was dangling. Apparently someone drunk decided to damage my car and some others . I'm just happy I thought of a solution that night to go get tape to keep the mirror from dangling. I would like to thank Wal-Mart for being open 24 hours!

I'm glad I was able to make another A on a test, I didn't get a lot of time to study for because it is my last class and had another assignment to do. Not only that. My favorite design was selected out of the six I had to turn in.

So I guess what I am saying is remain positive and keep your chin up. It gets better. Which is why I like Corey Taylor's music. It helped me deal with life and realize that I can only do what I can do. As long as I do that then no other opinions should mater.

Photos from the event. No particular order:

Looking Back at 2012

So before 2012 ends, I want to take a look back at some of my favorite and not so favorite moments this year. So pull up a chair, grasp your favorite beverage, and take a seat.
You might want to strap in, there will be turbulence.

So at the beginning of this year, I was about to turn 25. I was still living in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I just had a good Christmas in 2011. Got to see the majority of my relatives. I was really happy about that. Also I started an Instagram account.

So at the end of January, I had an awesome time celebrating my birthday with my friends in New Orleans at Wizard World. Got to meet Doug Jones and Adam Baldwin. Plus we saw the new Underworld movie. Amazing by the way and I'm currently watching it.

I also had a great dinner with my grandparents at Red Lobster. Plus I got to purchase some movies.

After my Birthday, we had inventory at work. That was a fun and interesting experience. For those of you reading and didn't I was working at Bed Bath & Beyond at the time. I had my year review on Feb. 3rd.

It was around early February or the Monday after the Super Bowl that I started three weeks of inventory. My favorite moment during that time was spending a week in Meridian, MS with my friend Nathan McPhail.

Also around that time I got to see Fuel with Venrez. Amazing show.

In late March, I started a blog writing movie reviews but put those on the back burner since they became hard to type up vs watching a movie. I posted my last review in May.

I'm proud of the reviews I typed but something else was brewing in the back of my mind. A short movie called The Return of Carl Hughes. One of my favorite things I have ever done. Plus I had a my friend/co-worker Josh help with a scene. thanks again Josh!!

I did all the artwork and the editing. Filmed the majority of the project.

Now for those of you, who don't know Carl Hughes is a character I created in the December of 2009 for Random Ninja Attack's web series Power On.

He started out as the evil Kyle but grew into the anti Hero and just a fun character.

http://blip.tv/carlhughes/the-return-of-carl-huges-6330604

The Art of One released a podcast during the summer updating everyone on our current status after a year and a half.

Also in May, my co-worker/friend Shelly retired from Bed Bath & Beyond and headed northwest to Montana with her husband and all of their animals. It was sad to see her go.

I would be moving myself later in the summer, I'll get to that later.

In June I finished filming/editing The Return of Carl Hughes but the movie wasn't finished until August when I got the scene filmed by my RNA co-creator/friend Eric Hesselberg.

Before the movie was released I entered a contest to get my artwork used in the CD booklet of a new side project of members of Alter Bridge/Creed/Tremonti/Sevendust know as Projected. I got two submissions of four into the CD booklet. It was a important moment for me.

In July after giving Bed Bath & Beyond notice I was moving. I moved the week before I moved I started posted my daily Song of the Day on a Monday.

I also had a going away party with my friends who are truly amazing.
Sean, Nathan, Heather, and Dave.

My mom, my siblings, and I packed up my belongings. And headed to Houston on July 14.

It has been hard since I left that day, but I keep moving forward to bigger and better things. Before staying in Waco. I enjoyed some off time with my family. Vacation. It was my first week off since I started with Bed Bath & Beyond in 2011. Anyway I had a blast with my siblings.

In August I started living in Waco. I started working again at Bed Bath & Beyond. Scheduled a doctor's appointment that helped me discover that I don't have sleep apnea.

Soon school started up again for me after I finished editing and uploaded The Return of Carl Hughes.
I was starting school for drafting which I discovered wasn't for me. I also got see the band 10 Years with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

I got to go to Wizard World in Austin where I got Sir Patrick Stewart and Eliza Dushku's signatures. Went to some Q&As as well. I had a blast going with my brother Kellen and Aunt Kathy.

In November, my friend Eric Hesselberg married his fiancé Ashley.

And after the Thanksgiving holidays, final exams. I made 3 As and a C. Then the Christmas holiday season and now it is New Years Eve.

Hope everyone has a fantastic New Year!

Update (April 16th, 2012)

Hello world of Blogger, Myspace, Twitter, and finally Facebook.

As this weekend of April 13th (4 pm) to April 16th (8 am) is almost coming to a close, I decided to write this blog for many reasons.

I felt this blog was needed to those that read my stuff, who are mostly my friends. Anyway I decided to write about this weekend to let you all know I will not be posting my status as much on Twitter & Facebook. Though I'll still be there to connect with you and etc. I won't be taking down my Facebook account. I feel like I don't get as much out of posting statuses as I used to. I will continue to use Instagram, which the new way of taking pictures. I have a lot of fun taking photos via Instagram.

Overall this past weekend I felt God's presence even though this weekend was mostly bad. You see I have had every weekend off for the most part. Though that is all the time I have off. It is 48 hours of my life to take a break. To relax. To reflect. To over think as some people say I do. Though I do tend to play my guitar or bass a lot during the weekend. I also catch up on all my phone games, which I will continue to play and do as best as I can do. Anyway feeling God's presence was soothing. If you read my statuses I posted via Twitter Saturday night: "I love you God! Thank you."

The reason for this tweet came Saturday. I felt God giving me comfort even though I'm not sure what I'll be doing, where I'll be going, and when I'm going. With that said I also thought about all my past projects and current ideas going on in my head. Which leads to my last two reasons for writing this. The first one dealing with Muzak Corner.

As you can all see I'm writing this here on my Muzak Corner blog. No this doesn't mean Muzak Corner is going to be happening again. I don't see Muzak Corner happening again review wise in the foreseeable future even though I did write my thoughts about Guns N' Roses Saturday morning. I wrote that entry because I felt lead to write it and for the reasonings mentioned in that particular entry. Though over this week I have thought about reviewing music again for Muzak Corner. I still don't see it happening since the demand of my reviews was never there in my eyes. Though what I got from the Muzak Corner Videos was acting and telling a story via moving images. There is a possibility for one last story to be told for Muzak Corner. Plus this Blog is for anything I feel that is personal or for things not related to my Movie Review Blog.

So why I'm writing this blog here? Why not on my Movie Review Blog? The reason I wrote on here instead of my Movie Review Blog was because this blog is still my personal blog. So with that said, I have notes for my movie reviews that I need to write. I will write and finish them. I just need to do it, but I have stuff I wanted to do before getting back to those. Though over this weekend. I decided to say screw it. I'm going to record some of my music ideas that I was saving until I got caught up. Which I did record some stuff. So why not say screw it again and finish my reviews. Well I am. I need to finish reorganizing upstairs since I moved a lot of my stuff around this weekend and get the house straighten for any potential buyers. Then I'm going to focus on finishing all my past reviews leading up to the movie I watched this weekend.

I apologize that I got behind on those. I may continue to write about personal stuff on this Blog and I may not.

As always thanks for reading,

Kyle Sullivan

My thoughts on Guns N' Roses induction Ceremony Tonight

Guns N' Roses has been on my mind quite frequently for the past several months ever since I heard they were be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. It has been one of the few things away from my job and my life that has been an interest to me. Since today is the day of the big event, I thought I would share my feelings on all the events leading up to who is performing for Guns N' Roses this evening. Most people like myself would have liked to see the CLASSIC lineup preform. Though after you are through reading this blog, you will see that I wanted something more than the CLASSIC lineup. You will understand what inspired me to write this blog. And overall how I feel about who is preforming this evening.

Before we dive into the pool of this Guns N' Roses induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, lets go back to June 1985 and meet the CLASSIC lineup.

Who made up this CLASSIC lineup?

The CLASSIC lineup consisted of Axl Rose on vocals, Slash on lead guitar, Duff McKagan on bass, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, and Steven Adler on drums. These are the guys we know as Guns N' Roses, but before Duff, Steven and Slash joined there was Ole Beich on bass, Rob Gardner on drums, and Tracii Guns on lead guitar. Though It was the CLASSIC lineup that recorded 'Appetite for Destruction'. The CLASSIC lineup has changed several times since the release of 'Appetite for Destruction' back in 1987.

Later Gilby Clarke [rhythm guitarist] and Matt Sorum [drummer] respectively replaced Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler.

I would continue discussing all the other lineup changes over the years, but I feel that you can easily go find out all that information on your own. However the current lineup of Guns N' Roses consists of Axl Rose on vocals, Dizzy Reed on keyboards/piano/percussion, Tommy Stinson on bass, Chris Pitman on keyboards, Richard Fortus on rhythm guitar, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal on lead guitar, Frank Ferrer on drums, and DJ Ashba on lead guitar.

After Slash, Duff, and Matt left in 1997, Axl and Slash haven't conversed. There is something personal between them. Now if you have followed Slash and the other former members of Guns N' Roses since there exit, you will know that they all continued to have success. Slash, Duff, and Matt even formed another band together called Velvet Revolver. Though that band is currently on hiatus since 2008 because Scott Weiland left the group for numerous reasons. Also since Scott left the Velvet Revolver, he has pursued a solo career and reformed Stone Temple Pilots in the 2008. Though it needs to be mentioned that Velvet Revolver did play a one off show with Scott Weiland in January of 2012 with the help of Velvet Revolver's other guitarist Dave Kushner.

Since 2008 Velvet Revolver has been searching for a new singer, but mostly working on their own projects. Duff fronts a band called Loaded and is a part-time journalist. Duff's band Loaded actually opened up for the current Guns N' Roses band in 2010 when Guns N' Roses was supporting the release of 'Chinese Democracy.' Also Duff joined the current Guns N' Roses on stage to perform four songs. Matt has filled in on drums for other bands. He has started a cover band called "Carnival of Dogs", which also consists of Tracii Guns.

For Slash, he decided to work on a solo album where he would write a song in a particular style for a particular singer in mind. This album was released in 2010 simply known as Slash. After the release of this album, vocalist/guitarist Myles Kennedy from the group Alter Bridge has found some success. Not saying Myles didn't have success before touring Slash's solo album, but Myles has gained more attention since then. Myles also preformed two songs on Slash's solo album included the single 'Back from Cali.'

Axl also released a new Guns N' Roses album in 2008 called 'Chinese Democracy.' After listening to the singles off the record and recent recordings of older Guns N' Roses' songs. I have to say Axl's voice is still amazing.

So now that you know the current history of Guns N' Roses. Lets move forward with the bands' induction announcement into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Announcement:

The Announcement of Guns N' Roses induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame occurred back on December 7, 2011. Though specifically it says CLASSIC Guns N' Roses was inducted. Axl said during an interview on VH1's That Metal Show: "I don't know what it means in terms of me with the old band and the old lineup. If we were to be invited, I don't know what they would ask of me. It's up in the air." After reading this, I actually agree with Axl. It seems unclear what lineup is allowed to play at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though there was some uncertainty of what would happen, both Axl and Slash were happy about the induction announcement. Slash also can be quote for saying "I have no idea how that's supposed to go. If Axl, [bassist] Duff, [guitarist] Izzy and myself start communicating, it could go one way. If we don't, God knows."

Since the Announcement:

Other former and current band members of Guns N' Roses have shared what they hoped for during the induction ceremony since the announcement. Most of the current band members who back up Axl Rose had said Axl didn't talk about it. They wanted to talk about it, but Axl didn't talk about it. This is the similar response from the other former members of Guns N' Roses. Though I believe Slash, Duff, Izzy, Steven, Matt, and Gilby might have talked since the announcement. Though one thing that most former and a few current members were hoping for was a reunion of the CLASSIC lineup. Former rhythm guitarist Izzy actually declined the invitation to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tonight. It is a choice to show up and play. Though most people where wondering what did Axl want to do.

On April 11, 2012, Axl finally spoke on what he wanted to do in the form of a thought out letter. In summary this letter said he wishes to decline the invitation and he has been quoted saying "Time to move on. People get divorced. Life doesn't owe you your own personal happy ending, especially at another's - or in this case, several others' - expense."

This is coming from the same guy that thanked his fans by posting "This is your victory." on his twitter account after hearing about the announcement.

Now like I said it is a choice, but I feel like Axl owes his fans something special for this victory. Yes he thanked them, but the fans of Guns N' Roses have been waiting since 1990 to see the original group. Now for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are also being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tonight, they will have other members of the band perform with them as well. Though John Frusciante will not be preforming though. Chad Smith, drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers said "We asked him, he said, 'I'm not just really comfortable with that, but good luck and thanks for inviting me.' He's that kind of guy, I think, that once he's finished with something he's just on to the next phase of his life. The Chili Peppers are not really on his radar right now." After reading that it is understandable as far as choice. Also learning that Josh Klinghoffer, who will be the youngest artist ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame made my assumption that it is possible that the current Guns N' Roses lineup might be honored tonight even though they won't be there since Axl won't be there.

I thought it would be cool to see the CLASSIC lineup play the first song and then are joined by Matt and Gilby for the second song and then the last song joined by the current lineup. Showing the change of the band. And the band plays songs form each era. Though this is all in assumption if only three songs are allowed to be played. I'm not sure on how the ceremony goes down since I've never attended this ceremony.

With that said tonight, Guns N' Roses will be represented by Duff, Steven, Matt, Gilby, Slash, and Myles Kennedy. Fans have been speaking about how they feel about Myles singing for this event, which is what inspired me to write this blog. I'm a huge fan of Myles Kennedy. Yes Myles doesn't quite sound like Axl. I think Axl can hit notes Myles can't as well. Though I say this, I still feel that Myles is a great singer. Also I understand the decision made of getting Myles by the Guns N' Roses' members who will be playing tonight. Now is Myles Kennedy being inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight with Guns N' Roses? No of course not. He is not a member of Guns N' Roses. This lineup of Guns N' Roses is to give something back to the fans. Yes I would be disappointed if the original singer wasn't there of my favorite band, but Axl decline and that is his right. Also by the way the most likely reason for getting Myles Kennedy is because of his connection with Slash.

Overall I'm satisfied that someone is performing for the Guns N' Roses, because it would be strange if no one played. Is Myles the best substitute for Axl. No, but you can't substitute anyone for anyone really. It is like trying to find the next Michael Jordan. There may be someone else in basketball like Michael Jordan and possibly have the same name too, but in the end there is only one Michael Jordan. What I'm trying to say is there is only one Axl Rose. There is only one Slash. There is only one Izzy Stradlin. There is only one Duff McKagan. There is only one Steven Adler. And those are the guys that made Guns N' Roses famous. We will always remember that group even if they never share the same stage ever again.

As always. Thank you for reading.
